117. Managing Up

Managing up is managing the relationship with your boss — developing and cultivating a productive working relationship with your boss. It is an opportunity to learn your boss’s management, leadership and communication styles and preferences. This, in turn, will help you learn about your own work and communication style preferences. Many people see this as a political game or an attempt to flatter their boss. There are probably some people who do manage up that way, but that doesn’t have to be what you do. I want you to see that managing up can be a positive for you and very beneficial for your career.
